Picking the wrong pipe thread size or standard is one of the most common (and most expensive) mistakes in hydraulic and plumbing systems. A mismatched thread leads to leaks, cross-threading, stripped fittings, and unplanned downtime. The good news is that measuring a pipe thread correctly only takes a few minutes once you know what to look for.
This guide walks you through exactly how to measure pipe thread step by step so you can identify the right fitting the first time.

 

Why Accurate Pipe Thread Measurement Matters

 

Pipe threads are not universal. NPT, NPTF, BSPT, and BSPP threads can look almost identical at a glance, but they use different angles, pitches and sealing methods. Installing the wrong type even if it "threads in" partway can cause:
⦁ Slow or sudden leaks under pressure
⦁ Damaged threads on both the fitting and the port
⦁ Seal failure in hydraulic systems
⦁ Repeat visits and wasted parts
Measuring correctly the first time avoids all of this.

 

Tools You'll Need

 

⦁ Calipers (digital or dial)
⦁ A thread pitch gauge
⦁ A ruler or tape measure (backup option)
⦁ The pipe or fitting sample itself

 

Step 1: Determine Male or Female Thread

 

Start by identifying whether you are measuring a male (external) thread or a female (internal) thread. This affects where you take your measurements from.
⦁ Male threads: measured across the outside diameter (OD) of the threaded section.
⦁ Female threads: measured across the inside diameter (ID) of the threaded port.

 

Step 2: Measure the Outside Diameter (OD)

 

For a male thread, use your calipers to measure the OD at the widest point of the threads (crest to crest), not the root of the thread.
For a female thread, measure the ID at the narrowest point inside the port.
Round your measurement to the nearest standard fraction of an inch. Pipe thread sizes are based on nominal sizes (like 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"), not the raw OD number. For example, a male thread measuring close to 0.540" typically corresponds to a nominal 1/4" pipe size.

 

Step 3: Count the Threads Per Inch (TPI)

 

Place a thread pitch gauge against the threads and find the blade that sits flush with no gaps showing light through. The number on that blade is your threads-per-inch (TPI) count.
If you do not have a pitch gauge, you can count manually:
1. Lay the pipe against a ruler.
2. Count the number of thread peaks within exactly one inch.
3. That count is your TPI.
Common TPI values you'll run into:
⦁ 18 TPI — typical for 1/4" and smaller
⦁ 14 TPI — typical for 3/8" to 1/2"
⦁ 11.5 TPI — typical for 3/4" to 2"

 

Step 4: Check the Thread Angle and Taper

 

This step is what separates NPT from BSP threads, since their outer dimensions can be very close.
⦁ NPT/NPTF (American): 60° thread angle; the tapered diameter narrows slightly along the length of the thread. NPT relies on this taper (often with thread sealant) to seal.
⦁ BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper): also tapered, but uses a 55° thread angle.
⦁ BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel): straight, not tapered and seals with a bonded washer or O-ring rather than the thread itself.
Quick check: run your finger along the threads. If the diameter clearly narrows toward the pipe end, it's tapered (NPT or BSPT). If it stays consistent, its parallel (BSPP).

 

Step 5: Confirm With a Reference Chart

 

Once you have OD or ID, TPI and thread angle/taper type, cross-reference these against a pipe thread chart to confirm the exact standard and nominal size. This matters because two different standards can share a very similar OD and TPI; only the full combination gives you certainty.

 

Common Mistakes to Avoid

 

⦁ Measuring nominal size instead of actual OD. A "1/2 inch" pipe thread does not actually measure 0.5"—nominal sizes are naming conventions, not literal dimensions.
⦁ Confusing NPT with BSPT. They can measure within a few thousandths of an inch of each other but are not interchangeable.
⦁ Skipping the pitch gauge. Eyeballing TPI often leads to off-by-one errors, especially on finer threads.
⦁ Ignoring the seal type. A tapered thread and a parallel thread with the same TPI still require different fittings and seals.
